Despite much excitement over a glucometer and a peewee, I realised that it was the 1st day of the year.
2008. Best Wishes to all and enjoy another year on our planet.
I thought I should conjure up a list of sincere intentions that I think would be healthy and realistic for me to achieve.
May everybody close to my heart have at least one experience that puts this year on the map!
1. As we are entering Lance’s 6th year of Diabetes, I really want to become extra vigilant with keeping his BSL between 5mmol/L and 10mml/L. After all, it is my responsibility to take care of it until he works it out himself.
2.Not allow myself near the Health section at the Library, or to buy the magazine Diabetic Living. They only torture me and leave me with a pile of “what ifs”
3.Get Lance a new paediatrician. I refuse to be treated by someone who has the worst bed side manner with children I have EVER seen again,
4. Introduce myself through mail and email to Mr Rudd and team, and let them know that I am fighting for the 140 000 people who are diagnosed with this condition, and how hard it is to battle on each day with vulnerable children.
5. Start a babysitting gig for parents of children with Diabetes. To go out and KNOW that your child is safe would be the most wonderful thrill for parents ever.
6. Assist JDRF Head Office with anything that they need assistance with.
7, Try and raise about $1000 through writing letters to those people in the community who have been generous in the past.
8, Insist that my son checks his feet, wears a hat ( even to the letter box) and teach him about Coeliac Disease and why it loves to hang out with Type 1 Diabetes so much.
9. Drive, a lot.
10. Help my parents go on social outings and learn about the internet and issues of interest.
11. Take spontaneous trips to funny little places along the Great Dividing Range.
12. Most importantly, wrap my arms around and give big lip smackers to Dan and Liz
13. Give most of my savings to the dentist to get Lance’s teeth fixed-a result of gum disease stemming from Type 1 Diabetes.
14. Continue to inform parents with the information that they aren’t told, and have to heartbreakingly learn themselves. You might find you will learn a bit from that kid, Lance, too.
15. Looking for the universe to plonk a divine gentleman with charm, wit, sincerity and extreme kindness into my lap….anytime from now will be fine, seriously. Dads are more than welcome to apply. As long as they are not Dad’s who are grandads. Ewww.
Insulin is not a cure.
